Silicon Carbide Rod and Tube Varistors

HVR non-linear silicon carbide (SiC) rod and tube varistors are high-energy, voltage-dependent ceramic resistors designed for heavy-duty over-voltage suppression and inductive energy absorption in power and protection equipment.

They are supplied in various lengths and diameters (see the specification section below), allowing voltage and energy capability to be tailored by geometry and are typically mounted by clamping or end-cap connections, sometimes within insulating sleeves or housings.

The long axial length of rod and tube SiC varistors allows operation at higher clamping voltages than discs or leaded parts, leading to higher energy dissipation

One of the most advantages of a SiC Varistor is the behaviour in the case of a fault. It has a self-healing characteristic and doesn´t shorten the circuit.

Typical applications are:

  • High frequency laser pulse application
  • Capacitor discharge in transformer stations
  • Non-linear, non-capacitive as a load dump in an amplifier application
  • Generators and wind turbines as load dumps
